PUBLIC REACTION!
The Center for Strategic Litigation (CSL) platform of the GLPS, expresses deep regret and condemns yesterday’s act of discrimination on racial grounds against members of the reported Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian communities that took place in the city of Gjakova, in a local gastronomy. Such heinous acts should be condemned by all actors in society as well as by all relevant institutions. The inaction of the public authority in not punishing such conduct constitutes a violation of the right to equality before the law and non-discrimination. These rights are guaranteed by the Constitution of Kosovo, and the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the European Convention on Human Rights, and the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities.
Cases of racial discrimination against the communities in question at various levels, whether institutional or outside them, are not uncommon. Racial discrimination as an action and as a norm is against the multiethnic character of the Republic of Kosovo, and in this regard this character of the functioning of the Republic must be guaranteed by its institutions. Therefore, we as the Center for Strategic Litigation (CSL) request an immediate response from the Institution of the People’s Advocate which has the task of protecting, supervising fundamental human rights and freedoms. Also, the Assembly and the Government of Kosovo must react in accordance with the competencies and mission they carry, so that such acts are not repeated and ensure that human rights are fully respected. The citizens of the Republic of Kosovo deserve institutions which are in charge and which protect their rights when they are violated.
The Center for Strategic Litigation (CSL) platform of the GLPS, invites all citizens of Kosovo and in particular members of different communities in Kosovo who consider that cases related to the violation of their rights constitute strategic cases, and for which state institutions have failed to address, submit their cases to:
